NOTEBOOK It was built by Herod Antipas, the murderer of John the Baptist, and named after his friend, the Emperor Tiberius, so it is only mentioned in the New Testament. The Sanhedrim met here last, and for 300 years it was the metropolis of the Jews in Palestine. It has been the abiding-place of many famous and learned Jewish rabbis. They are here buried. Opposite Tiberius on the east side of the lake the swine ran down to the sea. We have seen no country between here and Damascus capable of supporting any such population as one gathers from the Bible. The people of this region in the Bible were just as they are now—ignorant, depraved, superstitious, dirty, lousy, thieving vagabonds. Sept. 20. Bathed in Galilee before breakfast.
